Nifontovite is a rare Calcium Borosilicate mineral.
It occurs exclusively in Boron rich environments formed by contact metamorphism.
It has been found in only three known localities, Russia, Tajikistan and Mexico.
They typically display clear colorless prismatic crystals, with striations similar to the Lemurian crystals, although Nifontovite crystals have diagonal striations.
Production has been sporadic and limited which adds to the prestige of owning one.
Crystals exceeding 1cm height are considered exceptional for the species.
Nifontovite can be confused with clear quartz but while quartz crystals usually have six sides, Nifontovite only has four sides, another difference is the termination, quartz crystals usually have pointy terminations where as Nifontovite usually has a flat termination, finally Nifontovite has perfect cleavage, this means that when it breaks it maintains a straight plane instead of an irregular one like usually clear quartz creates in the bottom.
This crystal comes from Mina Del Rey, Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
